Turku has 7 air monitoring stations of which one is movable. The information from the stations is coming on-line to the Environmental Protection Office. The Quality of Air -reports are available for people in a direct telephone line, in newspapers daily and in the local TV. A new plan is to have the on-line air information available in the internet, too. The air monitoring is done in collaboration with the neighboring municipaliites and industries in the area. The emission measures of the industrial sites are done by the Environmental Protection Office, and they can advise the industry, if neccesary.
The Quality of Air in Turku is usually the poorest in the wintertime, due to the sub-zero temperature, air inversion, having the car engines going on for a long time etc. Advising, regulations and transport opportunities are developed to diminish the use of cars during a bad air quality situation. In the summertime the amount of ozone can also rise and affect sensitive people.
